Unlocking the secrets of the vines (Oregon Wine Press)

The history of agricultural research in Oregon dates from the land grant era during the 19th century. Oregon State University’s Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center, or SOREC, in Central Point, began in 1994 with the merging of the Southern Oregon Experiment Station and the Jackson County Extension Service. Since 2016, Dr. Levin has served as an associate professor at SOREC, one of 14 agricultural experiment stations run by OSU. Last month, he became the center’s director.

Speaking about the new research, paleoclimatologist Alan Mix told Reuters "that's stunning to see that happen so quickly." Mix, a paleoclimatologist at Oregon State University and co-author on the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assessments, who was not involved in the study, added "It appears to be kicking into gear right now. That's headline news."

The connection between the Gorge and Reagan’s 1980s “Star Wars” dreams is just one of the endless fascinating insights into the creation of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area summoned by Bowen Blair in his recent book, “A Force for Nature: Nancy Russell’s Fight to Save the Columbia Gorge,” published late last year by Oregon State University Press.

Logging Sports Regional Championship: The OSU Forestry Club is hosting the annual Conclave, with forestry teams from throughout the West coming to compete. Board of Trustees: The Oregon State University Board of Trustees will meet April 13-14 to consider tuition rates for the next academic year, the construction of a proposed student success center at OSU-Cascades, the university’s 10-year business forecast and stipends for certain members of public boards. OSU Voice and Theatre: Fledermaus. An evening full of high notes and high jinks. OSU voice and theater students collaborate to perform "Fledermaus," Strauss' well-loved operetta, full of waltzes and pranks, in English with chamber orchestra. Applications open for 2023 Homecoming Court: Students can share their Beaver passion and pride by applying to become a 2023 OSU Homecoming Court Ambassador. Speaker funding available: The President’s Commission on the Status of Women has funding available for groups seeking to engage speakers (virtually or in person) whose message supports PCOSW’s mission of advancing gender equity at OSU. Yarn donations requested: The OSU Craft Center has a weekly crochet club for OSU students. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to find community, learn and engage in a stress-releasing craft. This club is free; the craft center provides a gifted student crochet lead to teach and provide help as well as crochet hooks. Yarn donations are currently being sought from the community. Raising Awareness for Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Prevention: During the month of April, Cedar and the rest of the Department of Public Safety team will be wearing blue and teal DPS pins to raise awareness for child abuse and sexual assault prevention. The blue pins support Prevent Child Abuse Oregon in their effort to strengthen families and proactively protect children from abuse. The teal pins support the National Sexual Violence Resource Center in their work to end all forms of oppression, build racial equity and prevent all forms of sexual abuse, harassment and assault. SAAM Wear Teal Day: April is Sexual Assault Awareness/Action Month (SAAM), a time for us to support survivors, raise awareness and commit to action to prevent sexual assault and violence in our campus community. Award nominations sought: The President’s Commission on the Status of Women is currently accepting nominations for the University Mentoring and Professional Development award. This award recognizes any classified, professional faculty or faculty member who excels in mentoring, supporting and encouraging OSU employees, especially women and those from under-represented groups or non-traditional careers, and making available to them opportunities for professional, educational and personal development. Faculty Innovator award: This is the last week to submit nominations for the 2023 Faculty Innovator Award. This award honors an outstanding Oregon State University inventor who has made a contribution leading to commercialization that significantly impacts their field and society.
