Today in the News Media is a synopsis of some of the most prominent coverage of OSU people and programs. Inclusion of any item constitutes neither an endorsement nor a critique, but rather is intended only to make the OSU community aware of significant items in the media. Content appearing includes timely news and feature stories from broadcast, print and online sources. Occasionally, opinion pieces and first-person columns appearing in mainstream media outlets that are written by faculty members and pertain to their academic or professional expertise may be included based on their unique, informative value, timeliness and space constraints. Ray today called on the state of Oregon, the federal government and Oregonians to help address college students’ mental health and basic needs and reduce the tuition burden that students and their families pay for college. Bioinformatics Users Group (BUG): "Using OrthoFinder to identify shared orthologs, i.e., How can we computationally determine what coding sequences are shared between organisms" - Javier Tabima (Spatafora & LeBoldus Labs, Botany & Plant Pathology), Wednesday, Feb. 12 from noon to 1 p.m. in ALS 3005. BUG consists of life scientists, bioinformaticians, computer scientists, mathematicians, engineers, statisticians and researchers of all types who meet to discuss topics related to these fields of study. Meetings are generally informal, consisting of discussions, interactive talks or short workshops. Biochemistry and Biophysics Guest Lecture Seminar: Scott Hansen, an associate professor in chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Oregon. “Emergent properties of membrane proximal signaling” on Wednesday Feb. 12 at 3 p.m. in ALS 4001.

Ecological Detection in the Arctic: Three Vignettes: Marc Mangel is a biologist who is broadly interested in using mathematical methods to solve biological and ecological problems. He currently works on projects ranging from how human disturbance of foraging habitats will affect marine mammals to using population modeling to inform cybersecurity measures. “Household Energy in Guatemala” 3-credit field course info session: In this course, students from any major travel to Guatemala for 10 days in September 2020 to learn about technologies and policies to address household energy poverty facing 40% of the world. Please join the humanitarian engineering program for an info session on the course, Feb. 12, 5 p.m., Rogers 226. This is What Democracy Looks Like: A Genealogy of Movements — A film series by the Anarres Project that seeks to track the genealogy of strategies and political goals from a broad range of social movements over the past 40 years. Wednesday, Feb. 12, 6 p.m., Milam 318.

NEW! Introduction to CORE: The Cooperative Open Reporting Environment (CORE) is OSU's central tool for accessing official university reports and institutional data. All OSU employees have access to CORE reports and dashboards based on their employment classification and job profile. This session is designed to give new employees and CORE users who would like to review the basics an orientation to CORE. Topics in this session include security and policies related to the access and use of data, how to find and save what you need from CORE, and helpful tips and tricks for interacting with and using the system. Budget conversation: On Thursday, Feb. 13 at noon, the Office of Budget & Resource Planning will hold another University Budget Conversation in Memorial Union Room 215. This week’s topic is about the State Funding Process led by guest speaker Jan Lewis, Budget Liaison. The Budget Conversation sessions are limited to 60 minutes and are an open forum structure with the initial 15-20 minutes spent on presentation of the topic, leaving time for discussion and Q&A. Gatekeeper Suicide Prevention Training: Did you know that suicide is the second-leading cause of death among college students? This makes it especially important for campus community members to equip ourselves with knowledge that enables us to recognize and help when someone is in need. CAPS invites students, faculty, and staff to attend our Gatekeeper Suicide Prevention Workshops. Participants will learn how suicide impacts us nationwide and here at OSU, how to identify the signs and symptoms of emotional distress, and how to help or intervene if someone you know is considering suicide. Free Middle School Women in Science WorkshopDiscovering the Scientist Within is a program designed to nurture 6th, 7th and 8th grade girls’ interest in the STEM fields and consists of activities paired with adult women scientist role models. NEW! FY19 Sustainability Report: the Sustainability Office invites you to explore OSU’s FY19 Sustainability Report. Reports are partly built from the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS), a transparent, self-reporting framework for colleges and universities to measure sustainability performance. FY19 produced OSU’s highest STARS score ever, as we continue an upwards trend towards becoming a greener and more inclusive university.

Policy changes: Fiscal Policy 03-140-505 Meals, Refreshments and Events has been revised to update and consolidate related policies (FIS 410-01 Alcoholic Beverages, FIS 410-05 Hosting Groups and Official Guests, FIS 410-07 Non-Travel Meals and Refreshments, FIS 410-09 Graduation Events). The new policy and related FAQs can be accessed on the FPP website. OSU Folk Club/Thrift Shop Scholarships: The OSU Folk Club/Thrift Shop Scholarship Committee is accepting applications from high school seniors who will attend OSU in the fall of 2020 and are graduating from a Benton County High School or live in Benton County. Students will need to attend OSU full-time or have full-time dual enrollment in the Degree Partnership Program at LBCC and OSU with at least 6 credits per term at OSU in the academic year 2020-2021. The principal criterion for this award is academic merit. The Scholarship Committee is also accepting applications from non-traditional women (age 30 or older, who will be attending OSU full-time or part-time in 2020-2021 pursuing their first undergraduate degree). Students must be U.S. citizens and residents of Benton County, Linn County or Monmouth or Independence in Polk County. Principal criteria are financial need and academic merit. Applications are available at high school counselors' offices, at the OSU Folk Club Thrift Shop, 144 NW Second St. in Corvallis, and online at https://osufolk.oregonstate.edu. Deadline for mailing is March 6 for high schoolers and March 20 for non-traditional students. 

Encourage students to influence campus health and wellness: The National College Health Assessment (NCHA) survey was sent this week to a random, stratified sample of approximately 8,000 OSU (Corvallis, Portland Center, and Ecampus) students. We are aiming for a response rate of 20% or better by Feb. 26 – and we need your help to make that happen!  Please encourage any students with whom you are in contact to check their emails and complete the NCHA survey if they have been selected to receive it. It only takes 20-30 minutes of their time. Those who complete the survey are entered into a giveaway for one of: two Timbuk2 backpacks, ten Hydroflasks or ten $25 Orange Rewards. The survey is confidential and completely voluntary. Participants needed to review a survey measuring intergenerational contact: Participation involves a one-hour focus group, during which you will complete the survey individually and then engage in a group discussion about how the survey could be improved. Held on-campus on March 5. You will be compensated $20. To participate, email Shelbie Turner ([email protected]) with your name and which age group you fall into from the following: 18-39 years, 40-64 years, 65 and over.
