A hint of future fire seasons, as Southern Oregon emerges from the ashes of 2020 (OPB News)

Firefighters refer to the patchwork landscape where houses and forests blend together as the “wildland-urban interface.” These days, fires are burning in areas that weren’t traditionally considered wildlands. Move over, murder hornets: There's a new bug in town — and it's coming for your lawn (Seattle Times)

Alec Kowalewski, a turf expert at Oregon State University, plans to collaborate with Murray on a survey this summer using ultraviolet light traps to lure adults and get a better idea of how widespread the beetles have become. Since female beetles don’t like to lay their eggs in wet soil, one of the simplest control measures may be more regular watering in the summer, Kowalewski said.
