Courtney Campbell, Director of the Program for Ethics, Science, and the Environment at Oregon State, said the only way to guarantee an end to the pandemic is to make sure every country in the world has access to and adequate supplies of vaccines. "A pandemic is by definition a global disease," said Campbell. "The petri dish for developing a new variant, in those same ways that omicron was developed out of South Africa, is still there."
Oregon State University has been making headlines recently with studies on a number of issues, some having an impact globally. According to administrators, research and collaboration on that research is something they pride themselves on. Funding is also a major component.
From remote working, remote learning and increased online shopping, COVID-19 restrictions have had an undeniable impact on the last two years. Now, a new study out of Oregon State University has found that lockdowns have also affected countries’ electricity usage.
New OSU research linking some hemp compounds to Covid-19 prevention rippled through the Pacific Northwest industry this week, a bolt from the blue that had companies scrambling to assess and seize the opportunity. For an industry that boomed and then has suffered through oversupply, price compression, pandemic disruption and regulatory challenges, it was a sorely needed development.
"We've known that there's a strong relationship between perceived stress and physical health," said lead researcher Dakota Witzel, a doctoral candidate at Oregon State University's College of Public Health and Human Sciences, in Corvallis. (see also KLCC)
The guest speaker is zoologist Sylvia Yamada, a courtesy faculty at Oregon State University who has tracked European green crabs on the Oregon coast for more than two decades.
Researchers throughout the Northwest are working to help restore diminishing steelhead trout populations in the region and an Oregon State University scientist believes making adjustments at hatcheries could increase their chances of success. (see also KLCC)
Oregon State University is celebrating its 40th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration this month with a variety of events. One of the most popular is the annual MLK Peace Breakfast. The event features the presentation of a number of awards to OSU-affiliated individuals who have made a significant difference to their community in the spirit of Martin Luther King.
Oregon State University held its 40th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on Monday morning, Jan. 17. But instead of a celebration filled with the usual performances, this year’s speakers chose to bring attention to the current filibuster to pass voting rights legislation in Washington D.C.

West Greenhouse: As part of the 20 & 21 West Greenhouse project, a portion of sidewalk will be closed to pedestrian traffic between SW 30th and 35th streets on SW Campus Way for ADA access and sidewalk improvement work.
