The search for the next Oregon State University president could be nearing an end, with the Board of Trustees selecting on Tuesday, May 31 one of the two previously announced semi-finalists with whom to open contract negotiations this week. 
 

OSU-Cascades starts scholarship to ease child care worker shortage (OPB News)

Oregon State University-Cascades’ program would provide scholarships for 30 positions during the next two years. Recipients would have their first year of tuition paid in full, while also receiving paid work experience at child care centers in Central Oregon at a rate of $15-18 an hour.
 

What may be America's oldest place-based college scholarship celebrates 100th anniversary (Forbes)

The story of this unique legacy is told in a new, meticulously researched, highly readable book entitled Bernard Daly’s Promise: The Enduring Legacy of a Place-Based Scholarshipauthored by Sam Stern and published by Oregon State University Press. Stern, who is professor and dean emeritus of the College of Education at Oregon State University, undertook the task of researching the rags-to-riches saga of Bernard Daly, the history of the Daly scholarship, and the remarkable impact it’s had on thousands of students from Lake County, Oregon, a rural, mostly lower-income, conservative county in the high desert region of the state.

2022 International Association of Women in Music Conference: Call and (Her) Response. The keynote speaker is renowned musicologist and researcher Nina Eidsheim of UCLA. Her research interests include multi-sensoriality, production and perception of vocal timbre, 20th and 21st century vocal music and opera, critical studies in race and gender, performance studies, sound studies, and voice studies.  On the Corvallis campus and via livestream, June 2-4. NEW! Metabolic Research Study: We are examining how insulin release is triggered by tasting carbohydrates. Participants must be non-smokers and non-diabetic, aged 18-45. The study will involve having body measurements taken, having saliva collected, performing taste tests, having blood drawn and filling out dietary surveys. Ungrading Book Club: Have you been thinking about modifying your grading and assessment practices in time for next year? Participate in the Ungrading Book Club, a part of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) No-Strings Attached Clubs. Read and engage in rich conversations about Susan Blum’s (Ed.) book, "Ungrading: Why Rating Students Undermines Learning (and What to Do Instead)." CTL will provide free books to participants. Recruiting participants for virtual reality experiment: Psychology researchers are seeking participants who are at least 18 years old, speak fluent English and have normal or corrected-to-normal vision for research aiming to explore how perception and movement interact in real and virtual environments. Participants will complete movement- and perception-based tasks for around one hour. Carbon Offsets for OSU Funded Travel: The Sustainability Office can help you reduce the greenhouse gas impact of your OSU-funded air and ground travel. With basic information about travel itineraries, we calculate the amount of carbon offsets needed and combine our purchasing power to make it easy for you and your department. Community Climate Survey: The 2022 Faculty and Staff Community Climate Survey launched on May 10 with an invitation from Interim Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer Scott Vignos. Please check your email to access the survey link; the survey is open through June 3. The survey is administered every two years to gauge the opinions and perceptions of employees regarding their experience at OSU. It is one part of OSU’s broader efforts to create and sustain an inclusive and equitable university climate. To hear from as many people as possible, a $25 incentive will be provided to 50 randomly selected survey participants. The information participants enter for the incentive will not be linked to responses to the survey to ensure responses remain anonymous. Questions about the survey can be directed to OID at [email protected].

Call for Applications: Career Champions Program. Applications for the fall 2022 Career Champions program for teaching faculty and instructors are now being accepted. The Career Champions program provides faculty and instructors with tangible ways to incorporate career connection into the classroom, while advancing diversity, equity and inclusion and examining the barriers to access for first-generation, high financial need, and/or students of color. More information can be found on the Center for Teaching and Learning website. Please direct questions to the director of Career Integration, Brenna Gomez. Free COVID testsFree iHealth COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Tests are available around the Corvallis campus. Each box contains two tests. While supplies last, OSU community members can pick up these self-test kits at the following locations: Residence Hall Service Centers (Arnold, McNary and West); Lab tent outside Plageman Hall; Memorial Union Info Desk and Student Experience Center Info Desk. COVID-19 testing: Oregon State University, in collaboration with Willamette Valley Toxicology (WVT), is providing on-site COVID-19 testing for people without symptoms. OSU employees and students, regardless of vaccination status, are welcome to test at one of these locations: Corvallis: Lab tent outside Plageman Hall Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., and Cascade Hall 120, Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Bend: Outside Obsidian Hall Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and 3-5 p.m. Note: All employees will need a WVT Labdash account prior to testing.

Traffic and Maintenance

Utility tunnel: May 11-June 3. For work related to the Community Hall Slope Project, an access hatch to the utility tunnel will be removed and relocated. The current hatch is located on Jefferson Avenue across from Kerr Administration Building. Additional access hatches can be found west, north and east of this location. Communication lines in the tunnel in this area are temporarily supported and impede movement. Staff should avoid this area of the tunnel, if possible.

Washington Way: For work related to the Washington Way Improvement Project, a planned sidewalk closure along the north side of SW Washington Way is scheduled to run from 8 a.m. Friday, May 6 through 5 p.m. Monday, June 13. Pacific Power will be on site performing work related to the project (view map).
