Nature's 'lifeboats' of biodiversity can protect vulnerable species from climate change (The Independent)

With careful planning, these 'lifeboats' can act as "stepping‐stones for multiple species as climates continue to change", according to Oregon State University researchers. Combined with the study of climate‐change adaptation, it can provide practical information for land resource managers to think about solutions for protecting vulnerable species.
 

OSU expands coronavirus testing to Newport following the largest food processing outbreak in Oregon (Oregonian)

Oregon State University will expand its coronavirus testing to Newport, after an outbreak at a seafood processing plant infected 125 people in the community of 10,000. (see also KGWNews GuardKLCC)
 

Endangered: large university lecture hall classes (Ed Source)

While classes remain large, some rooms are being re-built to encourage more engagement and flexibility. Instead of fixed auditorium chairs, rolling tables and chairs allow for group projects and discussions. And even more dramatic, Oregon State University’s 600-seat in-the-round lecture auditorium, with wraparound display screens and high-tech lectern, has become a much-praised model since it opened five years ago.

A new study out of Oregon State University revealed two popular commercial pesticides shorten the lives of honeybees and cause psychological distress to the insect.

NewsChannel 21 spoke with Professor Amy Jo Detweiler, a horticulturist for OSU Extension Service offices in Crook, Deschutes and Jefferson counties. She said death camas can be found in a variety of forms across Central Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. She said it can be toxic to humans, wild animals and livestock if consumed.

Alan Robinson in memoriam (LIFE@OSU)

Alan Robinson, former head of Oregon State University’s Department of Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Health Physics, died April 23. Robinson was a groundbreaking researcher whose colleagues remember him as a devoted teacher and an early advocate for the university’s nuclear science programs.

A founding member of the Fabulous Thunderbirds and the older brother of Texas blues legend Stevie Ray, Jimmie Vaughan brought renewed attention to Texas blues in the 1980s, ultimately leading to Austin becoming a major American blues center. Tuesday, June 23 at 5 p.m. Registration is required to receive link to live webcast. Call for Applications: Bridging the Gap From Education to Employment (BGEE) Seminar. Applications for the 2020 BGEE seminar for teaching faculty and instructors are now being accepted. $500 will be awarded to participants. The Seminar will provide tangible ways to include career readiness in the classroom, while also taking a hard look at the barriers to access that our first generation, high financial need, and/or students of color face. Alumni Fellows nominations are due June 30: The OSU Alumni Association is seeking nominations for the Alumni Fellows Recognition Program. Due to COVID-19, Alumni Fellows are no longer required to be on campus for the 2020 celebration. Faculty & Staff COVID-19 Disaster Relief Fund Under IRS Code Section 139: In collaboration with the OSU Foundation, Oregon State University is offering emergency financial assistance grants through the OSU Faculty and Staff COVID-19 Disaster Relief Fund. The purpose of this fund is to help regular classified and unclassified employees in our university community with unexpected needs during this unprecedented time of the COVID-19 pandemic. All classified staff, professional faculty and academic/research faculty are eligible regardless of service time or FTE. An individual must be actively employed on the date of grant distribution. Read more about the details of the program here. Student hourly employees, graduate assistants, and stipend recipients (e.g., fellows) are not eligible. Traffic and Maintenance

NEW! Postponed: Annual Steam Shutdown-Campus Wide: Each year Facilities Services performs necessary maintenance on the university’s steam system, which requires shutting off the steam throughout campus, to complete maintenance services at the plant, throughout the steam tunnels and in each building. This process affects hot water supply, heating, and all equipment that uses steam, campus wide. The decision has been made to postpone the annual steam shut down until August in order to stay within the guidelines from the Governor, university, State and CDC’s orders. The steam shutdown for 2020 will occur from Aug. 24 at 11 p.m. to Aug. 27 at 8 a.m. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you all for your understanding.
