Modern teaching spaces require modern design and technology (Ed Tech)

At Oregon State University, the Learning Innovation Center (LInC), completed in 2015, serves up to 3,000 students simultaneously. The facility was built to accommodate formal and informal learning, incorporating technology and “human-centric design,” according to Andrea Ballinger, vice provost for information and technology.

“There’s a misconception out there that a lot of people have that, if things are just watered enough, they can get through these events,” said Chris Still, an Oregon State University tree ecologist and expert in tree heat physiology. “But the heat spells we’re talking about, like the heat dome, are so intense that I don’t think that’s really a tenable assumption anymore.”

In 2021, a groundfish survey published by NOAA Fisheries indicated that Gulf of Alaska cod had plummeted during The Blob, experiencing a 71% decline in abundance between 2015 and 2017. On the other hand, young groundfish and other marine creatures in the Northern California Current system thrived under the unprecedented ocean conditions, a 2019 paper by Oregon State University and NOAA Fisheries researchers found.

Care Talks, Caring for Aging Loved Ones: Declutter Your Older Loved Ones Home takes places at 10 a.m. March 15. Part of well home design is removing obstacles to better health. We’ll share tips on how to use principles from The Home Edit and Marie Kondo but with a twist for seniors living at home. This session also talks about “visitability” which is how to make your home age-friendly for visiting relatives and how to help seniors with “solastalgia,” the latest mental health issue for older adults based on living spaces. Register today.

The Making of a Public Radio Show: A Conversation with the Team from Live Wire. Live Wire is a weekly radio variety program that features interviews with writers, musicians, activists, and other interesting folks, plus musical guests and comedy. The show is taped live in Portland once a month, then broadcast around the country, where it airs on 200 public radio stations. Live Wire’s host, Luke Burbank, and executive producer, Laura Hadden, share over 30 years of Public Radio experience between them. OSU Associate Professor Elena Passarello has served as Live Wire’s Announcer since 2018. Recruiting Polar STEAM Fellows for broader impacts: Polar STEAM is recruiting NSF-funded researchers for collaborations with educators, artists and writers to develop broader impacts related to polar research. For 2023, researchers may be field based, conducting remote data monitoring, or a combination of both. Educators will be virtual. For future years, Polar STEAM will expand to include field deployments for educators, open applications to artists and writers and continue supporting virtual collaborations. Visit the Polar STEAM website and FAQ section to learn more and apply. Priority deadline for the 2023 field season is March 31.

2023 Faculty Innovator Award: Nominations are now being accepted for this award that honors an outstanding Oregon State University inventors who have made contributions leading to commercialization that significantly impacts their field and society. For details and the nomination form visit the OSU Advantage website: 2023 Faculty Innovator Award.
