Douglas fir trees in Klamath Mountains are in 'decline spiral,' OSU research shows (KMTR)

Increases in mortality among Douglas firs in the Klamath Mountains are the result of multiple factors that have the iconic tree in a “decline spiral” in parts of the region, a new study by the Oregon State University College of Forestry and OSU Extension Service indicates.  
 

OSU-Cascades starts scholarship to ease child care worker shortage (OPB News)

Oregon State University-Cascades’ program would provide scholarships for 30 positions during the next two years. Recipients would have their first year of tuition paid in full, while also receiving paid work experience at child care centers in Central Oregon at a rate of $15-18 an hour.
 

Bill would connect state to hotline for agricultural workers (Wallowa County Chieftain)

Allison Myers, the associate dean for Extension and Engagement at Oregon State University’s College of Public Health and Human Sciences, and the interim leader for OSU Extension’s Family and Community Health Program, noted that “our rural folks and our agricultural folks” are among those most vulnerable.

“One of the biggest mistakes people make is to plant too early,” said Weston Miller, a former horticulturist with the Oregon State University Extension Service. “They get excited when it’s sunny for a few days, put plants in the ground and think they will grow. But the seeds either rot from damping off fungus or germinate very slowly. At the very least, they’ll be stressed for the rest of the season and never catch up.”
 

Researchers are looking into risk factors for whales who get caught up in fishing gear (KGW)

Researchers with Oregon State University are trying to better protect whales from getting entangled in fishing gear. They have discovered some areas of the ocean are more at risk for whales to get caught up in that gear, and the research has been forcing some changes for some fisherman. (see also KLCC)

NEW! Corvallis Public Seed Library Pop-Up Vegetable Garden Plant Clinic: Benton County Master Gardeners will hold a pop-up plant clinic event at the Corvallis-Benton County Library's Public Seed Library from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. March 25. Master Gardeners will help you plan your garden, select seeds right for you and answer your vegetable garden growing questions. There will be one last early season pop-up vegetable garden clinic on Saturday, April 1. Individual donations of open and partially used seed packets packed for '22 and '23 are needed, and can be donated any time at the library circulation desk.

Reading and talk with author Christopher Preston: Author Christopher Preston will discuss his new book, “Tenacious Beasts: Wildlife Recoveries That Change How We Think about Animals,” at 5:30 p.m., March 23 in the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library’s main meeting room. He will offer a look at how some wildlife species are defying the odds and teaching important lessons about how to share a planet. Co-sponsored by the Spring Creek Project, the School of History, Philosophy and Religion, and the College of Forestry.

Human-robot interaction: The Human-Machine Teaming Laboratory in Oregon State University’s Collaborative Robotics and Intelligent Systems Institute is conducting a research experiment to study human-robot interaction for peer-based environments. Participants will be trained as first responders and complete a series of disaster response tasks with a robot teammate and will complete anonymous questionnaires. The experiment requires participants to complete two separate two-hour sessions. Participants who complete the entire evaluation will receive $60. Washington Way: As part of the Washington Way Improvement project, Washington Way between 30th and 35th streets will be closed March 21-22. Flaggers will be present at the 35th St. intersection to direct traffic. Other possible impacts include dust, mud and noise near the construction site.
