Today in the News Media

Today in the News Media is a synopsis of some of the most prominent coverage of OSU people and programs. Inclusion of any item constitutes neither an endorsement nor a critique, but rather is intended only to make the OSU community aware of significant items in the media. Content appearing includes timely news and feature stories from broadcast, print and online sources. Occasionally, opinion pieces and first-person columns appearing in mainstream media outlets that are written by faculty members and pertain to their academic or professional expertise may be included based on their unique, informative value, timeliness and space constraints. It is not the policy of OSU Today to include Letters to the Editor.

Toxic 'forever chemicals' flow freely through this river -- and now its fish (National Geographic)

“PFAS chemicals look a lot like a fatty acid, something we get from our food,” says Susanne Brander, an eco-toxicologist at Oregon State University who specializes in the effect of toxins on fish. “The fish ingest this chemical, and the receptors in cells identify it as a fatty acid. Instead, you’re getting an imposter molecule. The message gets jumbled.”

What you need to know about dividing plants and replanting (Oregonian)

Dividing is a matter of digging up plants, prying them apart with your hands, spades, knives or an ax and replanting them in new holes, said Weston Miller, a horticulturist for Oregon State University’s Extension Service. As perennials grow from the crown and the clumps get larger, plants decline in vigor and have fewer flowers. If you wait too long to divide, flowering can stop altogether.
