'Extreme draining' of Oregon reservoir eliminates invasive species, helps endangered salmon (Oregonian)

Letting a river return to its natural course, even if only for a brief period, has other benefits, too. Invasive species disappear and endangered species, like the imperiled salmon of the Willamette River basin, get an extra boost. That’s according to a group of researchers at Oregon State University, who published their findings Tuesday in the journal Ecohydrology.

Residents see trailer parks as homes. Investors see them as cash cows (Huffington Post)

“Very few places embrace the idea of having more or new mobile home parks, so as we’ve seen parks be converted to other uses or redeveloped, we’re losing lots and we’re not replacing those at the other end,” said Kate MacTavish, a professor of human development and family sciences at Oregon State University and the author of “Singlewide: Chasing the American Dream in a Rural Trailer Park.”

Oregon State students re-enact 1969 march across campus(KEZI)

In 1969, black students organized sit-ins and protests against actions and rules they felt were oppressing students of color at OSU. Students walked out across campus for a march after a black football player was told to shave his facial hair, which was a team rule at the time.

The robotics startup spun out of Oregon State University in late 2015 with an aim to commercialize research from the Dynamic Robotics Laboratory on bipedal locomotion. The company introduced its ostrich-inspired Cassie robot in 2017 as a bipedal research platform.

NuScale, a Portland company, hopes to revive nuclear power with smaller, safer and cheaper reactors. Spun out from Oregon State University research, these reactors take up 1% of the space of a conventional reactor with more safeguards and far fewer moving parts. To cut costs, the technology will be fabricated whole instead of assembled on-site.

Mob grazing paying off near Jordan Valley (Capital Press)

Corvallis levy scores landslide victory (Gazette-Times)

The new fee would add $17.31 to the average monthly residential bill, $121.17 for a grocery store, approximately $3,500 for Samaritan Health Services and more than $35,000 per month for Oregon State University. Nonprofits such as Samaritan, OSU and the Corvallis School District do not pay the property taxes that fund most city services.

Akon and Jesse McCartney are going to headline OSU's Dam Jam concert (Portland Mercury)

In a recent news release, Oregon State University announced the lineup for Dam Jam 2019, headlined by none other than R&B star Akon and pop sensation Jesse McCartney—causing us all to question whether we just accidentally time-traveled back to 2005. The year-end concert will go down May 31 at OSU's historic Reser Stadium at 8 pm.
