A bipedal robot named Cassie, created at Oregon State University, was outfitted to look like an AT-ST Walker from the Star Wars film “Return of the Jedi” — and for once we’re feeling more nostalgic than petrified about the possibilities.
An interview conducted by OSU's Susan Shaw. Klein’s recently published book, Pure: Inside the Evangelical Movement that Shamed a Generation of Young Women and How I Broke Free, documents her journey through purity culture and into healing, freedom and feminism.
Federal grants often go to experimental design projects, leaving less room for other types of studies, according to Katie Linder, research director at Oregon State University Ecampus. She once tried to propose an ethnographic approach to understand system-level approaches to implement educational technology, but it fell outside the scope of funders’ priorities.
"The firm with the winning bid then assumes full responsibility for managing the day-to-day operations of a prison facility: hiring staff, disciplining prisoners, stocking supplies, providing legally mandated programs and so forth," said Brett C Burkhardt, an assistant professor of sociology at Oregon State University.
One of the earliest artifacts in BBBB is a big green, wood-stoppered carboy (brewer techspeak for a giant jar) that looks like a huge Japanese fishing float and twice as fragile, yet it made the trek to Oregon country along the Oregon Trail in a covered wagon. It’s just one of more than 100 artifacts, many on view for the first time, from the Oregon Historical Society collections and from the Oregon Hops and Brewing Archives at Oregon State University.
When you think of solar panels, you probably think of them as producing clean, renewable energy. But researchers at Oregon State University have found another, very different use for the panels- to help grow food. (see alsoManufacturing.net)

Suicide prevention workshop: Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students. Participants will learn how suicide impacts us nationwide and here at OSU, how to identify the signs and symptoms of emotional distress, and how to help or intervene if someone you know is considering suicide. Lecture on OSU women’s athletics and PE, 1880s-1940: Ted Cox will chronicle OSU women athletes' roles from 1898 basketball champions to the 1930s and the evolution of physical education for women. Cox coached the OSU women's volleyball team in 1973 and 1974. His lively, photo-filled presentation is Nov. 7, 5 p.m., in the Valley Library’s fifth floor Reading Room.

Breaking the Silence: Join us at Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. in The LaSells Stewart Center for a screening of the documentary Breaking the Silence. The film explores the lives of five LGBTQIA+ Oregon veterans, who not only served their country honorably, but were forced to serve in silence and at great risk to themselves, their careers and their families. Vistas & Vineyards 29th Anniversary Juried Show: The Giustina Gallery at The LaSells Stewart Center is hosting the 29th anniversary of the Vistas & Vineyards juried show. This show exhibits the talents of more than 60 local artists and runs from Nov. 2 to Dec. 9. The opening reception is on Nov. 9 from 6-8 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Theater auditions: Auditions for Oregon State University Theatre’s winter production, “The Little Prince,” will be at 6 p.m. Nov. 10 and Nov. 13 in the Withycombe Hall main stage theatre, 2901 S.W. Campus Way, Corvallis. Performance dates are March 1-3 and March 8-10 with technical and dress rehearsals Feb. 24 through March 2. All performers must be available for all technical rehearsals and performances. Rehearsals will begin Jan. 8 and generally run Sundays through Thursdays until technical rehearsal week. Fiddle choir: The touring fiddle choir Childsplay will perform at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14 in The LaSells Stewart Center, 875 S.W. 26th St., on the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis. Led by violin maker Robert Childs, Childsplay is comprised of more than 20 musicians from around the U.S. and Ireland, with each member of the string section playing a violin or viola handmade by Childs. Board of Trustees: The Executive and Audit Committee of the OSU Board of Trustees will hold a telephonic meeting from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, to consider a recommendation of potential candidates for an anticipated trustee vacancy, the board’s 2020 calendar, and an audit progress report. The committee also will receive the annual compliance and ethics program report, an annual Office of General Counsel report, and a legislative update. Room 207 within the university’s Memorial Union will be open to the public as a site for listening to this meeting. Vienna Boys Choir: The Vienna Boys Choir will perform two shows, at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m, in Corvallis on Saturday, Nov. 17, in the First United Methodist Church, 1165 N.W. Monroe St. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door for adults, and $10 in advance and $15 at the door for youth through age 18. OSU students are free with ID while there is seating available. NEW! Faculty Senate Elections – Non-Tenured Faculty with Split Appointments: According to the Faculty Senate bylaws (http://senate.oregonstate.edu/bylaws Article V. Sec. 1.) non-tenured faculty who have split appointments between two apportionment units may choose with which unit they wish to be apportioned for senate purposes; this choice will determine senate representation. For example, if a faculty member has a split appointment between Agricultural Sciences and Science, they may choose one or the other (FTE will not be split among units). Faculty not choosing where they wish to be apportioned will be placed in an apportionment unit at the discretion of the Faculty Senate Office.
