So researchers from Oregon State University in the US have tried to teach software to do just this, using neural networks.

Documentary screening & talk with Wade Rathke: “The Organizer” follows Wade Rathke, the controversial founder of ACORN, and explores the much maligned and misunderstood occupation of community organizing. Rathke founded the organization in 1970, and shepherded its growth into a national political powerhouse. Internal conflict and external pressures would lead to its downfall, but undeterred Rathke continues to build new organizations around the world. Wednesday, Oct. 3, 3 p.m., MU Journey Room 104.

SEIU meeting: The next SEIU Sub-Local 083 membership meeting takes place Sept. 20, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Valley Library Willamette West Seminar Room, third floor. Fall Into Service: On Saturday, Sept. 22, the SLI Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) is holding its annual Fall Into Service event, which is the first day of service of the year. Volunteer opportunity: Volunteers are requested for canvassing Corvallis neighborhoods in pairs to welcome students to the community. The canvassing takes place from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sept. 23. NEW! New Pedal Corvallis bike share stations: OSU in partnership with Oregon Cascades West Council of Governments is bringing two new Pedal Corvallis bikeshare stations to campus this week and adding nine additional bikes to the program. One station is adjacent to the Crop Science Building, on 30th Street at Campus Way, and one is adjacent to Gill Coliseum, on Ralph Miller Lane at 26th Street. The stations are funded by sponsorships from ASOSU and OSU Transportation Services. The bikes are available to anyone age 18 or older. An updated map can be found HERE. An annual pass is $25 and a one-month pass is $10. Pass holders can use their phone to unlock the bikes for rides of 2 hours or less for free. Additionally, a new Pay As You Go pass is $1 per half hour.  

NEW! Valley Library expands weekend hours: Students requested it, the library responded, and now there are longer weekend hours. Here’s when the library is open during academic terms. University Standard updates: Oregon State University will accept written comments on two proposed university standards: 03-010 Procurement Thresholds and Methods and 03-015 Procurement Solicitations and Contracts. Comments will be accepted through the end of business on Oct. 9.  The purpose of the comment period is to receive public feedback on these proposed standards, which will modernize, update, and replace three existing standards (580-061, 580-062, and 580-063). Robotics symposium: Registration is now open for the OSU150 Futures Focus Symposium:  The Promise and the Peril of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics.  This event features sessions all day, a free lunch, keynote by Jacob Ward and a free reception, and you may select the sessions that you can attend.  Registration is free, but required for this culminating event of OSU’s 150th anniversary celebration. 

Toy Drive: As a past sponsor of our annual Joy Drive, AABC- HR is having a Toy drive for the new Kids- Closet program sponsored through OSU Family Resource’s.  Many of our students celebrate different holidays throughout the year that do not always fall during the month of December. Many of these holidays also include the tradition of gift giving that can create a financial stress for our students with children. In creating a student support program that reaches the greatest number of students with children, we have decided to open a year round gift closet so that families may “shop” for any holiday, or even their child’s birthday. Mid-Monthly Emergency Preparedness Topic – Pets in Disasters:  The likelihood that you and your animals will survive an emergency such as a fire or flood, tornado or earthquake is directly related to your level of emergency planning. Whether you decide to stay in place in an emergency or evacuate to a safer location, you will need to make plans in advance for your pets. Apply now for the Ecampus Research Fellows Program: If you are interested in conducting research about online teaching and learning, the Ecampus Research Unit will help you plan your proposal for the Ecampus Research Fellows Program. The Ecampus Research Unit annually funds up to five faculty and/or department projects - $20,000 each - to support research in the areas of distance and online education, including hybrid delivery. Term-Long Laptops at the Valley Library: The Valley Library has 24 Dell laptops available for long-term borrowing. These laptops are term-long substitutes for students without computers. Free office supplies: If you belong to a department on campus and need office or lab supplies, visit the Surplus warehouse between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays, to get some for free. To participate, choose items priced at $5 or less, with a limit of $20 total per visit. Items must be a cash sale or marked with white price tags. Visit the front desk to log your items before leaving.

OSU Standard Updated:  Oregon State University will take written comments on its proposed update to OSU Standard 576-060 Alcoholic Beverages, through the end of business on Sept. 21.  The purpose of the comment period is to receive public feedback regarding updating and replacing the existing standard on alcoholic beverages on campus with University Standard 07-005 Alcoholic Beverages.
