OSU awarded money from the EPA to slow spread of herbicide-resistant weeds (Pacific Northwest Ag Network)

Last week, the EPA announced that Oregon State University is one of  six programs across the U.S. will split $780,000 from the Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program.  The funds will be used to explore the use of Integrated Pest Management in Agriculture over the next two years.
 

Genetically modified yeast yields intense hop aromas in beer, research finds (24 Tech Asia)

Oregon State University brewing researchers and a team of bioengineers have shown that a genetically modified yeast strain can alter the fermentation process to create beers with significantly more pronounced hop aromas. (see also American Craft Beer, KGW, KTVZ)
 

Hillsboro to build Oregon's first microchip 'innovation center' (Hillsboro Tribune)

The announcement from the city says that it will work with partners like Oregon State University, Intel and the Oregon Business Council, to establish the center and the programs it will offer.
 

Ecologists Bruce Menge, Jane Lubchenco inducted into scientific academies (LIFE@OSU)

Bruce Menge, OSU Distinguished University Professor of Integrative Biology and the Wayne and Gladys Valley Chair of Marine Biology, was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences on Saturday, Sept. 10, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Free bike registration: OSU’s Department of Public Safety and Transportation Services is hosting a bike registration event on Sept. 26 from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the McNary Dining Quad. The event is free. Registering your bike with 529 Garage is a tool used by law enforcement to reduce bike theft and obtain information such as serial numbers and photos in the event your bike is stolen. You can also register for ZAP Oregon State, a free bike commute rewards program for Oregon State University students and employees.

By learning how to speak and be heard (and encouraging others to do the same), you’ll surface the best ideas, make the highest-quality decisions, and then act on those decisions with unity and commitment. This program consists of a series of five live, online sessions on Thursdays 10 a.m. to noon, Oct. 6 through Nov. 3. NEW! OSU Advantage: The OSU Advantage Innovation Impact Program is accepting applications for its fall Accelerate cohort which begins Oct. 4. Accelerate is open to teams who want to launch high-growth businesses or explore the commercialization potential of an idea. NEW! Public Service Loan Forgiveness: The Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) provides public service employees with federal student debt forgiveness, in certain situations, after 10 years or 120 consecutive monthly payments. On Oct. 6, 2021, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) announced a change to Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program rules for a limited time as a result of the COVID-19 national emergency. Now, for a limited time, borrowers may receive credit for past periods of repayment that would otherwise not qualify for PSLF. The waiver ends Oct. 31, 2022. Join a representative from the Department of Education as they discuss the PSLF program, and the steps borrowers need to take to make sure they get credit under the Limited PSLF Waiver. Sept. 28, noon. Register for this webinar.

Santa Fe Arts residency: OSU graduate students Val Chang (Ph.D. Geography) & Jay Baker (MA Environmental Arts & Humanities) have been awarded Santa Fe Arts Institute’s 2023 Changing Climate Arts Residency. While in residence in Santa Fe, NM during February and March, they will work to further their unique interdisciplinary, art-sci collaborations and work toward the program’s goals of fostering “artistic exploration, creative activism, and community art actions related to global warming that inspire individual transformation and inform collective action” (sfai.org). Study participants needed: “Effects of Multi-axial Whole Body Vibrations on Postural Stability.” Public health researchers at Oregon State University are planning a study to measure how different seat suspensions attenuate exposure to whole body vibration and affect biomechanical exposures and postural stability. Apply now for the Ecampus Research Fellows Program: If you’re interested in conducting research about online teaching and learning, the Ecampus Research Unit will help you plan your proposal for the Ecampus Research Fellows Program. The Research Unit annually funds up to five faculty and/or department projects — $25,000 each — to support research on distance and online education. Media training: OSU’s Office of News and Research Communications is restarting in-person media training sessions this fall. The half-day sessions are designed to build participants’ understanding of the media, develop interviewing skills through mock interview sessions and increase confidence in working with journalists. Call for Blended Learning Fellowship Nominations: The Center for Teaching and Learning is accepting nominations and self-nominations for a 2022-23 Blended Learning Faculty Fellow. The Fellow will support CTL’s mission of enhancing teaching excellence. The Fellow will be involved in coordination, design and facilitation of faculty development around blended learning. Free COVID tests: Free iHealth COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Tests are available on the Corvallis, Bend and Newport campuses. Each box contains two tests. While supplies last, OSU community members can pick up these self-test kits without restrictions. Traffic and Maintenance

Full road closure for section of U.S. 20: ODOT is working on a construction project to build a retaining wall, realigning and reconstructing a portion of the road and repairing damage caused by landslides on Hwy 20. Work includes fixing the road surface from milepost 55.4 to milepost 55.6 and milepost 56 to milepost 56.2 to create a smoother ride and prevent water from pooling. If you use this route for work at OSU-Cascades, research, field work or other travel, note that a two-week full road closure is scheduled Sept. 9-22. Detour information is available online. Expect daytime single lane closures Monday through Friday from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. through October 2022.
