Researchers from Oregon State University and USDA have published a study showing that virtual fencing is a useful potential tool to help cattle create fuel breaks that could slow wildfires from spreading across sagebrush rangelands.

Microplastics, like many other contaminants, are everywhere — in the air, our food and our water, said Susanne Brander, an environmental toxicologist and an associate professor at Oregon State University. They don’t decay naturally, but instead break down into smaller and smaller pieces. She said it’s important that the state methodically work throughits “cutting-edge” testing and explain to people what’s in their water.
Corvallis police are searching for a driver involved in a hit-and-run that injured a student near the Oregon State University campus Monday night. The hit-and-run occurred at about 6:20 p.m. in the 2600 block of Northwest Harrison Boulevard in the Greek Row area, about two blocks from campus. Police say the student, identified as 21-year-old Aliyah Lopez, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment of traumatic injuries.

Loan forgiveness: OSU is a qualifying employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program, designed to provide student debt forgiveness to public service employees in certain situations. On Sept. 28 at noon, OSU will be hosting a webinar regarding Public Service Loan Forgiveness and the temporary waiver to this program that is active through Oct. 31. Recruiting participants for bicycling simulator experiment: The OSU Bicycling Simulator lab is seeking participants for an experiment who are at least 18 years old and have ridden a bicycle in the last 10 years. The purpose of this study is to make autonomous vehicles safer for bicyclists. Participation involves a one-hour time commitment and coming to the OSU Bicycling Simulator. Research Office System Update to Cayuse Human Ethics: The Research Office is excited to announce that the Human Research Protections Program is transitioning the IRB protocol submission module to Cayuse Human Ethics. The last day for PIs to submit any materials through the old system, iRIS, is Oct. 3. Internationalization grant application now open: The Office of Faculty Affairs Internationalization Grant is open to all OSU professional and academic faculty and INTO OSU employees. The program awards up to $5,000 for projects that advance the university’s internationalization agenda.
