TRACE OSU testing: OSU is holding random weekly COVID-19 TRACE OSU testing of students, faculty and staff on the Corvallis and OSU-Cascades campuses and at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. Free parking will be provided to those working remotely to come to the Corvallis campus for testing. Inspired by this news, I asked Chunhuei Chi, director of the Center for Global Health at Oregon State University, to tell me how safe it was to bring a kid to a playground. “Pretty safe,” he said. In general, being outdoors is safer than being indoors, and if children on the playground wear masks, that makes it even safer, he said.

New push for a shift in promotion and tenure (Inside Higher Ed)

The proposal came out of a National Science Foundation grant to Oregon State University to study whether it should add support for innovation and entrepreneurship into its tenure and promotion guidelines. That led to the creation of the Promotion and Tenure, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Coalition, which includes officials from the 67 universities. 
 

Oregon commercial Dungeness crab industry leading on reducing risks to whales (KMTR)

The Working Group meetings led to the beginning of a research project to fill the critical information gap on where and when whales are feeding in Oregon waters. Oregon State University’s Dr. Leigh Torres leads the project funded by the Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission and NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). Oregon Sea Grant, ODFW and the U.S. Coast Guard partner in this important project.

OSU to study effects of wildfire smoke on hemp crops amid historic fires (MG Magazine)

Researchers at Oregon State University’s Global Hemp Innovation Center have put together a team to study the effect of wildfire smoke on hemp crops. The team will study significant factors including how close crops are to the source of smoke (wildfires), levels of intensity and time of smoke exposure and their effects on plants, how different strains of hemp react to smoke, and how smoke could effect extracts derived from exposed crops.
 

Breaking Barriers: Three of the world's top female ocean explorers talk trailblazing in ocean discovery and conservation (KTLA)

Dr. Dawn Wright, Chief Scientist of the Environmental Systems Research Institute (Esri), became the first African American female to dive to the ocean floor early in her career, and never stopped breaking barriers after that. She currently plays a critical role at Esri by strengthening the scientific foundation for their software and services. She also represents the company, a world-leading geographic information system software, research and development company, to the international scientific community. Additionally, Dr. Wright is an active board member of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and other conservation agencies. A professor of Geography and Oceanography in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University, Dr. Wright was honored as Oregon Professor of the Year in 2007.

During his keynote, Scott Reed, Vice Provost Emeritus for University Outreach and Engagement at Oregon State University, shared that it’s time for higher education institutions to invest in disruptive innovations like Juntos. He said they need to avoid replicating educational cultures that aren’t catering to the needs of the entire student population.

NEW! Correction regarding pay: Below is specific information regarding pay for those classified employees who were required to work onsite during the time period when some of the University buildings were closed. Eligible hourly classified employees should see essential pay for Sept. 9 to Sept. 15 reflected on their September paychecks. Any essential time worked on Sept. 16 will be paid with the October paycheck (for pay period of Sept. 16 to Oct. 15). Eligible salaried employees will receive essential pay in the October paycheck due to the nature of salaried pay, where additional pay (overtime, etc.) and/or leave used is reflected the following month due to the lag in timesheet submissions. Announcing FYI Friday Workshops for Faculty and Staff: The annual Training Days event coordinated by University Human Resources will be modified this year due to the limitations on physical gatherings during COVID-19. In place of the in-person two-day conference normally scheduled in November, this fall UHR will be piloting a new program called FYI Friday. The FYI Friday program is similar to Training Days, in that it is a platform for various university groups to share information with the OSU community. Traffic and maintenance

Power outage: Electricity will be turned off in several buildings Oct. 1-3 for power grid maintenance.  Milam Hall will be on backup power for the entire outage; Kidder Hall will be on partial backup power during the entire outage; Gilkey Hall and Milne Computer Center (except for the Data Center which will be on generator power) will experience an outage from 5-7 a.m. on Thursday and Saturday mornings. Turn off all electronic devices before you leave the affected buildings on Wednesday and Friday evenings. If you have an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS), also known as a battery back-up, please be sure to turn it off as well. Be prepared to have someone report to campus on Thursday and Monday mornings to turn computers, printers and other electronic devices back on as necessary.
