"The high stress of an isolated environment can actually aggravate or exacerbate a lot of things that are happening," said Erin Pettit, a glaciologist at Oregon State University who has co-founded several initiatives aimed at supporting women in field science.

Ruth is studying for her doctorate at Oregon State University. She guided project technicians Devin Hendricks and Julianne Herrick through the desert by truck and on foot. The three had been pummeled in the rudely cast rays for three weeks while continuing a study of the Big Horn Basin’s greater sage grouse habitat and factors that affect their numbers — like predators, agricultural practices and, in a much smaller sense, energy exploration and extraction.

The implication here is that perspectives that uphold racist ideals, oppressive ideals, are just as good to be heard out and understood as those that represent voices of the marginalized in society.”

HVAC problems delay reopening of library: The Valley Library was scheduled to reopen for limited hours on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Unfortunately, problems with the HVAC system mean that the Valley Library is closed on Sept. 8 and 9 as the library waits for the replacement of a key component to bring the system back up to capacity. For the most current information about our reopening plans, check the Library Hours page or Ask a Librarian.

Board of Trustees: The OSU Board of Trustees will meet from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, to consider the issuance of OSU revenue bonds and an adjustment to the Cordley Hall capital project budget. The board also will receive updates on the university’s COVID-19 response, budget and public safety program. Given current COVID-19 guidance from the Governor’s Office, as well as university and county health officials, the meeting will be hosted through a remote conferencing service. The meeting is open to the public. The meeting agenda, options for joining the meeting and instructions for providing comment during the board meeting’s general comment period and in a testimony period held before the board votes on each action item are located at this webpage. OSU Center for Advancing Diversity: The OSU Center for the Advancement of Women in Leadership is expanding and will be re-launching as the OSU Center for Advancing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in Business at the start of the fall term. Housed in the OSU College of Business, the center provides programs for working professionals as well as OSU students, faculty and staff of any discipline or unit. The new focus for the center will be to accelerate the development of a business community that prioritizes and advances DEI, with a mission to empower students, alumni, business professionals and organizations with education, tools and training to advance DEI in the workplace. The center will continue to offer women's leadership programs and prioritize a gender equity lens with its work. Power grid maintenance: Facilities Services has announced that the electricity will be turned off in several buildings Thursday, Sept. 10 to Saturday, Sept. 12 for power grid maintenance. Milam Hall will be on backup power for the entire outage; Kidder Hall will be on partial backup power during the entire outage; and Milne Computer Center and Gilkey Hall will experience an outage from 5-7 a.m. on Thursday and Saturday mornings. Please be sure to turn off all electronic devices before you leave the affected buildings on Wednesday and Friday evenings. NEW! SW Jefferson Way closure: For work related to the Buxton Hall and Hawley Hall roof replacements, both lanes of SW Jefferson Way will be closed between SW Weatherford Place and SW Sackett Place through Sept. 11 (view map). Demolition of Naval ROTC Armory: As part of the Washington Way Improvement Project, work related to the demolition of the Quonset Hut that served as the previous home of the Naval ROTC Armory is scheduled to start on Wednesday, Aug. 26 and continue through Thursday, Sept. 17.
