CORVALLIS, Ore. – Auditions for Oregon State University’s winter 2020 production of “The Secret Garden” will be held at 6 p.m. Nov. 18 and 19, and, if necessary on Nov. 20, in the Withycombe Hall Main Stage Theatre, 2901 SW Campus Way, Corvallis.

“The Secret Garden” is a musical based on the 1911 English children’s novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, with book by Marsha Norman and music by Lucy Simon.

The production, set in 1906, tells the story of young Mary Lennox, who is sent to live with her uncle following the deaths of her parents during a cholera outbreak in India. Mary discovers a secret garden, makes friends, uncovers the past of her family and learns love and rejuvenation.

The preliminary audition is a vocal audition; those auditioning are asked to prepare 16 to 32 bars of music in the style of the show. An accompanist will be provided. Actors who wish only to be considered for the non-singing roles of Mrs. Medlock and Mrs. Winthrop may present a one to two minute monologue in lieu of a vocal audition.

Callback auditions will consist of cold reads from the script in addition to prepared musical selections from the show. For those called back, the musical preparation component will be assigned following vocal auditions.

Auditions are open to OSU students, staff and members of the community. Those auditioning should bring their schedules to discuss any possible conflicts.

Those auditioning should expect to stay after their scheduled time slot for potential call-back assignments.

A cast read-through will be held at 6 p.m. Dec. 6. Regular rehearsals begin Jan. 5 and will be scheduled from noon to 6 p.m. Sundays and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursdays.
