CORVALLIS - Edmond F. O'Donnell, a senior in biochemistry and biophysics at Oregon State University, has received a prestigious Goldwater Scholarship from the Goldwater Foundation.

O'Donnell, from Coos Bay, Ore., hopes to do advanced work in biochemistry and perform research relating to cancer growth, screening, and novel treatment methods. He has also received a number of other academic scholarships, done undergraduate research, been active in Boy Scout volunteer work and participated in student government at OSU.

Goldwater Scholars are selected on the basis of academic merit, in a federal program honoring Sen. Barry Goldwater that encourages outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. It is the premier undergraduate award of its type in these fields, and covers the cost of tuition, fees, books and room and board for a one or two year period.

Only 320 Goldwater Scholarships were made this year in the entire nation. O'Donnell was the only student in the Oregon State System of Higher Education to receive this honor.
