Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center will host its annual Marine Science Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 11, in Newport.
The annual science fair and open house features marine science programs and scientists based at Hatfield.
The event includes a keynote address, “Artificial Intelligence and Its Role in Human-Nature Connection” by Danny Pimentel, co-director of the Oregon Reality Lab at University of Oregon.
There will be a mini film festival that screens several short award-winning films from last winter’s Big Blue Film Fest.
In “Sounds of the Sea,” visitors will learn how researchers use hydrophones and bioacoustics to identify unique sounds of the sea. There will also be an interactive “Sounds of the Sea” game to test how well observers can identify underwater sounds.
Walking tours will be given throughout the day but fill up quickly. The center’s marine exhibits will all be open during the event and there are kid-friendly zones set up for interactive games and activities for all ages.
Marine Science Day is free and open to the public and no advance registration is required. To attend or learn more, visit the event website.
